A 92-YEAR-OLD WOMAN HAS BEEN PREGNANT FOR THE PAST 50 YEARS! AND DELIVERS THIS!

For anyone who hasn’t heard the term ‘lithopedion babies,’ this story will be scary and shocking. A 90-year-old woman in Chile has been carrying a foetus in her body for the last 50 years .

The woman discovered she was pregnant in scans done after she had a bad fall. The foetus weighing two kilos died during the pregnancy and calcified.
It was never removed from the woman’s body.

She lived with the calcified foetus in her body for 50 years. This phenomenon is known as lithopedion, when the amniotic sac calcifies as the body’s defence against infection from the decomposing tissue. Yes, this is reality, not an excerpt from a science fiction story.
But when she went into labour, she didn’t deliver a baby, only amniotic fluid and some blood. Since nothing could be done, she lived with abdominal pain and loss of appetite for 28 years till she died. Her husband demanded an autopsy on her body and a calcified foetus of a girl emerged.
Doctors say a lithopedion can happen when a pregnancy occurs in the abdomen instead of the uterus, commonly called an ectopic pregnancy . The foetus does not survive for lack of blood supply and, since the body cannot expel it and it is too big to be absorbed by the woman’s body, the foetus calcifies. Doctors also say that it is more common in rural areas riddled with poverty and poor healthcare.

Another similar case was reported in China. 92-year-old Huang Yijun of Southern China had been carrying a foetus for 60 years. In 1948, doctors told Yijun that her baby had died in the womb due to an ectopic pregnancy. She finally delivered the 60-year-old lithopedion foetus in 2009.
